My name is Will Wood (don’t worry about my website picture, I’m not in the habit of playing half-dressed!).

I’m Scottish, grew up in Edinburgh and moved to Basel, Switzerland when I was 20 years old.

My original musical upbringing consisted of classical piano, violin and theory lessons combined with daily choir singing and playing in diverse orchestras or classical formations.

During my classical studies in Basel (first singing and then choir-conducting) I discovered my unquenchable thirst and lust for jazz and improvising at the piano. A post-graduate certificate in Free Improvisation helped give me a somewhat other insight into improvising.

The next years I spent playing in various jazz-combos, accompanying jazz-choirs and singers, including my talented brother, Mark Wood (menu „Audio„).

In 2013, together with the equally diverse, inspired and motivated double-bassist, Hannes Fankhauser, I founded the Jazz-Trio „Woodville 3„: a trio in which we could live out all our musical ideas and fantasies with own compositions and under the motto „Standards verjazzt“ original arrangements of Jazz Standards and other music – spacey Take 5 with two-part vocal plus piano harmony, Straight no chaser in Kanon, Cherokee – peace-pipe on the prairie, Ds Heidi from the swiss Liedermacher Mani Matter in latin-style, Come Again from the Renaissance composer John Dowland jazzed up (hear me sing)… just to name a few.

In June 2015 we started playing with the talented young drummer, Tim Leiser, with whom we recorded our Debutalbum „Welcome to Woodville“ (2016 Unit Records) and „a-live“ (2019 Unit Records) – live recordings from our 2018 concert tour.

In 2022 Tim left the band and we started playing together in the formation Woodville 3 & Tian Long Li – with Enrico Solano on drums and Tian Long Li on the mouth organ. Our album „SERENDIPITOLOGY“ will be released on 11th October 2024 with the label „altrisuoni“.

From 2015 to 2019 I played regularly in the Vibraphone-Quartet „Soniquete“ (See Videos and Website in the menu „Video„). We have created an original type of Jazz with influences from Flamenco and Avantgarde, also using classical composers such as Debussy and Messiean and much free improvisation.

I’m also employed as an organist and pianist for the Sunday services and other projects and events in the old peoples‘ home and hospital, Adullam in Basel, for which I have also composed various pieces for musical video-stories (see „Other stuff„).

Of course no musicians‘ life is complete without ad hoc formations. Meaning, I also often play in other combos depending on whatever you need for your occasion.

Since 2025 I have been playing as keyboarder and backing vocalist with the party band „Prime“ and working closley with the music agency „BandScape„.
